Apparently, the main complaint from tourists when they are in Sin City, besides the huge amount of smoke pretty much everywhere (with the exception of the top-quality places such as Venetian and Palazzo, Bellagio and so on), is the this mandatory additional, fixed charge imposed by many establishment and off the Strip. You may want to find out how to avoid paying this additional cost altogether (read below to find out), but before that let's see what it is exactly and let's work out if avoiding it is actually the best thing for you and for your pocket.

What is it: it is an additional charge (on top of your room rate and taxes) which is meant to cover the establishment' facilities and services, which include the use of the gym (or fitness centre, or exercise room), the use of the spa (Jacuzzi, Saunas, Steam Rooms), local phone calls, daily newspapers to the room and other services (each establishment may have all of these, fewer or more). The principle behind this is that, since every guest is going to use some if not all of those facilities and services, rather than paying for the individually they are all combined together in a single cost.

The Price: The cost ranges from around five to fifteen dollars. It is added to the advertised rate at check-in. All Vegas establishments state how much this additional fixed charge is but it often is in the fine print of their rate page or special offer page. If in doubt, just pick up the phone and ask them; we do it all the time to be absolutely sure of what we are going to pay, since we like to keep to our allocated budget.

It is often the case that the more facilities and services an establishment offers within that charge, the better quality of these facilities and services. For example: there are places which will charge 5 dollars overall, but, in some cases, that charge covers basic services and facilities, such as the use of a very basic, almost unusable fitness room (as opposed to a well-equipped gym). It is therefore important to find out, before you book, what is actually offered and what those services and facilities actually are. We are avid users of the gym when we are in Vegas (partly to burn the extra calories we accumulate by eating at Las Vegas buffets every single day of our stay!) so we call each time before we book to confirm what type of fitness facilities are included, what their opening hours are, whether it's just a cardio room or if it is a fully-equipped gym, and so forth (each hotel may change their policy on this additional charge and on what's included almost overnight, so it's always advisable to check). You will be surprised at the differences; just because an establishment states that they have fitness facilities included in this charge, it does not necessarily mean that those facilities are actually good. At the same time, just because they don't charge this cost, it does not mean that you will not end up paying it anyway (more on this later).

So, how to avoid paying this charge?

There are mainly two ways to avoid paying it:

to book a place which does not charge it (but beware of the drawbacks, as we'll explain further on)

to book a special players card offer; sometimes special package offers (say '3 nights for the overall price of 99dollars', and so on) are additional-charge-free and, even better, they are tax-free (what we mean is that the advertised package price is all inclusive of any charge, so there are no surprises at check out). Every time you are about to book a room or suite, no matter what package it is or from what special offer, always read the fine print and, if in doubt, ask them over the phone.

We like to choose accommodation based on how good the rooms or suites are, how good their customer service is, how good their casino is, the facilities they provide (gym, spa, pool and so on) and the quality of their buffet. We do not like to limit ourselves to the establishments which don't apply the additional charge often because there is always a 'catch'; more on this further on). So, we will select special offers and packages which, overall, are convenient and a good deal without sacrificing the quality of the stay. As per the best price overall, bear in mind that one place may be additional-charge-free, but the overall deal may be not so good (for example, they may not offer you buffet deals or they may not offer you free-play).

What's the catch of when an establishment does not charge this additional cost?

The majority of the establishments in Sin City which apply NO additional charge actually offer worse services. By that I mean mainly worse fitness and spa facilities and with restricted opening hours. This is mostly the case with the Caesars' Entertainment establishments (former Harrah's group): they have the most limited fitness and spa services in terms of opening hours and quality. Some of their pools and pool areas are also quite 'deficient'. On the other hand, some which do charge an additional cost, have amazing facilities and services and in the end you will be more than happy that you have paid it; you may not care for the gym (unlike us), but you will probably enjoy a better pool area! Finally, some of the MGM group establishments (the newest ones, such as Cosmopolitan) are also additional-charge-free but you will be hit by expensive prices if you opt to use their services after all.

So, if you plan to avoid using any of the facilities or services and you are staying in one of these additional-charge-free establishments, make sure you truly do not use these services because, if you do, you will be disappointed and, above all, you will be hit by a huge charge (fitness and spa facilities are ridiculously expensive if you pay for them separately and, as already said, some of those services are not good).

Off-Strip establishments which do not apply this additional charge can still offer services and facilities but of course, understandably, they may be limited in quality and variety (though not always), though they are often available for longer hours during the day, often closing later at night. We like that! One of the best off-strip places with no additional charges but offering decent services (such as fitness facilities) is El Cortez, situated downtown (but this establishment is very affordable in every aspect, actually, whilst clean and nice, so it's a great deal if you are on a budget).

So, in summary: before you book, make a list of the facilities and services you are likely to want to use (phone calls, gym, spa, rest areas, etc) and find out how much they are separately. Do the math, work out which ones you are likely to use and which ones you are not and then decide which accommodation establishment is best for you. Some places (such as Gold Coast) have a very low additional charge so it becomes almost a non-issue. But, admittedly, some have a high additional charge, in which case working out what's best for you, what's offered, what quality accommodation you will have, what customer service will receive and so on, will be worth-while endeavours before you book your stay.

Catch N.1 - Caesar's Entertainment establishments (Paris Las Vegas, Bally's, Rio All-Suite, Caesars Palace, Flamingo, Imperial Palace, Planet Hollywood and Harrah's), do not impose the above-mentioned additional charge attached to a room reservation. However, if you book over the phone, they will charge you a ridiculous $11.20 'processing cost' (as if they were the only ones with telephone assistance in the world), which tops and exceeds many of the establishments' additional charge. So, if you can, avoid booking over the phone because, unfortunately, they do not inform their phone customers of this processing cost, quite deceptively we could say. This ridiculous processing cost is waived for high rollers and certain 'VIP' members and it is also waived for seniors. Make sure you ask before you book (before you even tell them your name or total rewards card number).

Catch N. 2 - Some of the no-extra-charge establishments actually offer no facilities that would warrant any additional charge or, if they do, they are sub-standard (in our opinion). Some of them will even 'hit' you with other charges, such as the Caesars Entertainment (former Harrah's Group) 'booking processing cost' (as explained in the earlier paragraphs of this page). Others, such as Four Season, are so expensive overall that applying a few dollars to their over-the-top nightly rate would be insignificant. Moreover, as already explained in the previous paragraphs, if you then decide to use one of their facilities, you may be disappointed by their limited opening times and/or how expensive they actually are if paid for separately. So, make sure you ask as much information as you can and don't chal bad about doing so, otherwise you will be either disappointed or will simply end up paying more than you would have by just paying the additional charge!

What is a capsule hotel?
A capsule hotel can be described as a hotel system that provides densely populated accommodation which contains rooms of a relatively standardized size based on modular plastic or fibreglass sleeping quarters. Other than your own room, all other facilities are shared.

History
Although capsule hotels are quintessentially Japanese, the first capsule hotel was only built in 1979 by a chap in Osaka by the name of Kisho Kurokawa. The rates were a bit lower back then at about 1,600 yen. Capsule hotels are a uniquely Japanese phenomenom not only because of space restrictions but because Japan is still a relatively safe country and such a facility would be unthinkable in many other countries.

It wasn't until 1985, when the Tsukuba Science Expo was held, that capsule hotels became well known in Japan. There wasn't enough room to accommodate everyone so the organisers decided to make capsule hotels so everyone could enjoy the expo and stay overnight. This became big news when reported on Japanese televsion, and since then capsule hotels have become part of the Japanese vocabulary. The first reported capsule hotel in Tokyo was Green Plaza Shinjuku, located in the red light district of Kabukicho. The Green Plaza is also the biggest capsule hotel in Tokyo with 630 rooms.

How to use a capsule hotel
Most capsule hotels do not have a key to the room so you need to place your valuables in a separate locker. You have to share the bathroom, rest room and bath with everyone else (most capsule hotels have a sauna included). Most of the basics are provided and they have a communal bath which you share with other clientelle. Many capsule hotels have a large bath called a 'Rotenburo' which means 'open air bath' where you can relax under the open sky.

When you enter you have to take off your shoes, put them in a shoe locker and lock it with the key which is provided. You then give the shoe locker key to the reception staff and they provide you with another key for a small clothes locker. At this point they give you a description of how their system works. There is usually a Yukata, bath towel and a small hand towel in the locker in which you place your belongings. After you do this you can then go to your room.

You can watch a small television while lying down (usually around 8 inches). In fact, the capsule hotels are so compact that it is possible to operate the lights, air conditioning, TV, radio and Alarm Clock from the bed without having to move. One negative aspect of Capsule Hotels is that they are not sound proof, so it is possible to hear the person next to you snoring (earplugs are recommended).

Most capsule hotels have a two-tiered system so each room has two capsule rooms - one on top and one on the bottom. The people at the front tell you whether you are on the top or bottom one and you can access the top bunk rooms via the stairs provided. For those over about 190cm, you have to bend your legs slightly when you go to bed. For those who are a little overweight there usually isn't a problem with the width.

Location
Most capsule hotels are found in central city areas where it is common for people to miss the last train or bus. Nearly all capsule hotels are within walking distance of a station.

Reservations
Although many people use capsule hotels because they miss the last train home, it is possilbe to make reservations via the internet or by phone.

Conditions
Many of the capsule hotels only accept men, but there are some which are exclusive to women. In terms of time restrictions, most places have a check in time of 17:00 and check out time of 10:00am. Depending on the type of capsule hotel, you are required to return to the hotel by 02:00, but others are 24 hours.

Although most capsule hotels require you to stay a night, there are some which allow you to use facilities for a shorter period of time if you just want to take a break. For example, at Capsule Inn Akihabara they allow you to take a shower for 500 yen or sleep/rest for 3 hours for 1,200 yen or 7 hours for 2,500 yen. Some places have restrictions on how many nights you can stay, so if you are looking to stay for a period of more than 2 nights you should check their conditions before booking.

Capsule Hotels are thought to be men only domains, but there are many places available where women can stay. Some are exclusive to women and some allow both men and women to stay in the same complex, although the accommodation areas and bathing are separated.

At most capsule hotels you can not take your own food or drink into the capsule hotels and you must be over 18.

Recent trends
Although foreigners describe capsule hotels as 'Coffin hotels', in many cases this is an unfair description. Some of the more recent capsule hotels have internet access, a key for your room, private videos (such as Hotel Dandy in Ueno) and a private shower room. They also have cabin types which have a chair and table. More recently, double-bed capsule hotels have been introduced where you are allowed two people to a room. In many of the new establishments, on the top floor they have an open sauna (rotenburo) and a separate massage room. In particular, some of the women only capsule hotels are quite extravagant with high quality spas.

Alternative accommodation
If you are looking for something even cheaper than a capsule hotel (although possibly not quite as comfortable), other alternatives are Kenkou (health) land or Manga Kissatens.

She then numbered each item and shipped them to the Inn. Once at the Inn they were put together like a giant puzzle. The suites are two stories with balconies and views of the beautiful gardens.

Recently they added the Mayors House. This lovely accommodation has a private courtyard, two fireplaces and the bedroom has a beamed ceiling. The Inn adds just the right touches to add to the magic of the place. Huge bouquets of flowers will fill an armoire in the reading area of one of the rooms. Or a canopied sofa will be covered in exotic fabrics in vivid colors. Every single room is unique and beautiful to the last detail.

It is like a dream when you step into the dining room. Absolutely pure luxury awaits you. Each table is very romantic with silk lampshades in a rose color floating overhead. Reinhardt Lynch is the host and he keeps a watchful eye as Patrick's dazzling creations arrive at the 30 cozy tables. If you can believe it, each course outdoes the last one. The Sommelier will marry a wine with your ordered meal from the wine cellar containing over 14,000 bottles of wine. You have decided to visit Asia for your next vacation and have decided to go to Pattaya, Thailand. Your flight is booked but you are still looking for a hotel. But, how do you decide which hotel to stay at?

Your decision should be based on what you plan to do while you are Pattaya. Will you be spending most of your time sightseeing, shopping or enjoying the nightlife? Most likely you will be enjoying the nightlife and will want to be located in the heart of it.

There are three main areas in Pattaya – North, South, and Central and all three have their plusses and minuses. Getting a hotel in any of the three will boil down to a personal preference.

North Pattaya is in the Soi 2 area or even a little further North called Naklua. Most of the tourists here are from Europe and the nightlife is adequate but not spectacular. I rarely go to the Naklua area but I do enjoy the Soi 2 nightlife area.

South Pattaya is very good and includes the area around the infamous Walking Street. There are many hotels available from Soi 13 to Walking Street and also along the side streets between 2nd Road and Walking Street. Many are small pubs with a handful of rooms above the bar.

To me, Central Pattaya is where to stay. The location is perfect as I can walk or catch a baht bus to anywhere in a matter of minutes. Beach Road, 2nd Road or even down to Soi Buakhao are perfect locations as long as the hotel is between Central Road and Soi 13.

Most of the hotels in Pattaya are in the 2 – 4 star range with the occasional 5 star (Marriott) but a 2 – 4 star in Pattaya is definitely a cut above similar hotels in the states. I prefer the smaller, pub places that have a handful of rooms upstairs. Most are owned by a couple and really do their best to make your stay a great one.

Do your research, and look for a discount Pattaya hotel, and enjoy your stay in the Land of Smiles. It won’t be hard to find your Asian hotel in Pattaya at all.

You have decided to visit Asia for your next vacation and have decided to go to Bangkok, Thailand. Your flight is booked but you are still looking for a hotel. But, how do you decide which hotel to stay at?

Your decision should be based on what you plan to do while you are “Krung Thep”. Will you be spending most of your time sightseeing, shopping or enjoying the nightlife? You don’t want to waste valuable time in a Bangkok taxi inching along Sukhumvit Road.

Siam Square area is a good place to stay if you want to have some fun shopping. There are hundreds of small shops at street level and the Siam Center and the Siam Discovery shopping centers have many up-market brand label shops. On the top floor of Siam Discovery Center there is a cinema complex with some of the most comfortable seats to be found in the world. After a hard days shopping, relax and lie down as you watch a movie!

Another great shopping mall nearby is Mahboonkrong (MBK). It will take only 10 minutes to walk there from Siam Square and you will find literally hundreds of smaller shops and stalls, selling many goods at bargain prices. Electronics and clothes are the specialties here. Both of these areas are on the Skytrain routes and are easily accessible.

If you plan on seeing other parts of the country, taking ½ and full day trips, I suggest you book your hotel near the Bangkok Airport. Make sure that you stay near the new Bangkok Airport – Suvarnabhumi and not at Don Muang. Only stay in this area if you do plan to go to Bangkok proper. Bangkok Airport hotels are conveniently located and easy to get to from Suvarnabhumi.

If soaking up the Bangkok nightlife is your reason for visiting, there are a few different areas you can stay. If Patpong Road is your destination, stay either on Silom or Suriwongse Road. The Nana Entertainment Plaza is on Sukhumvit and Soi 4 (or Soi Nana) and there are a variety of hotels – everything from the JW Marriott to the Majestic Suites or the Dynasty. In the Soi Cowboy area, you can stay anywhere near Soi Asoke, Soi 22 or anywhere along Sukhumvit Road and just catch the Skytrain.

Probably, your hardest decision will be selecting your hotel since there are so many 4 and 5 start hotels in Bangkok. For the budget traveler, there are also cheap hotels in Bangkok. Some hotels that I recommend are: Windsor Suite Hotel Bangkok, Viengtai Hotel Bangkok, Radisson Hotel Bangkok, or the Amari Airport Hotel Bangkok.
